Paul's Farewell (Toddler/PreK)
This week in Calvary kids, Paul had to say good-bye to a group of believers and it was really hard for them. Paul always took the opportunity to encourage those around him even in the midst of hard things, and we should too! Just because we say goodbye to someone we care about, doesn't mean God's story is done.
Read Acts 20
Last week in chapter 19, people were getting all mad about not being able to sell the idols they made. Finally things settled down, and Paul encouraged some of the followers there in Ephesus before having to say goodbye in this chapter.
Paul had a lot of friends in the family of God! This is one of the most special, and amazing blessings we get to experience when we are a part of God's family. Paul would soon be arrested and won’t see some of these people ever again. Because he knew this, he took time to go around and encourage as many followers as possible. As usual, there were people who wanted to cause trouble, so Paul had to avoid this as well.
Paul went on talking to his friends until late at night at midnight! How many of you have stayed up so late that you fell asleep right where you were? That is what happened to this young man! He was listening to Paul, but ended up falling asleep on the window sell and fell right out of it to the ground. Paul knew right away God was going to use him to heal this young man. He went right down to him and said “Don’t worry, he is alive now”.
God’s power brought this young man back to life! Paul went right back upstairs and kept on teaching. I am sure some people were in awe of this and had multiple reactions!
The young man went home alive and well. God is so good!
In verses 13-16, we see Paul go to several places. He decided not to go back to Ephesus, and wanted to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost as soon as possible.
Paul then sent to the Elders of Ephesus and let them know that he knew his mission was changing because he needed to obey what the Holy Spirit wanted him to do. He needed to still go to Jerusalem. He isn’t sure what is going to happen fully but the Holy Spirit prepared him to accept that he would go through many troubles and jail time in different cities. Instead of being scared, Paul did not care about his own life but the lives of others who did not yet know the Gospel. He wanted to accomplish his mission, and do it well. He loved the Lord so much, he was willing to be put in uncomfortable situations for the sake of His name. We should all be filled with the desire to finish the work that God has given us in our own lives.
Paul explained to the people that this would be the last time that he would see them. Have you ever had to say goodbye to someone and it was sad? Paul and all the believers were very sad during this time, but he reminded them of all he taught them. He also warned them to keep walking with the Lord and remember all things that had been said and not become lost. He was honest in saying that some will twist the truth, which means to turn the truth into a lie.
As believers, we have to be careful! Some people will try and lead you away from God; event those in your own church. This is why it is important to read God’s word and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. It’s also important to know God’s word so that if someone does twist it or change it, you will know! We learned about the Bereans a couple of weeks ago and they searched the scriptures to make sure what was being said was true. We should do the same!
Through all of Paul’s journeys, he always followed the Lord, and what He wanted. He obeyed the Lord and allowed the Holy Spirit to work through Him, showing God’s love to others and praying for them. He encouraged them and also warned them, telling them
what to be careful of.
When Paul does go to jail, he will write letters to churches. So even from jail, he will encourage others. We will talk about that another week. Just remember to obey the Lord and allow Him to use you to share Him with others! Paul was loved by many people. Although it may have been the last time they saw him on earth, they would see him again in
Heaven! That will be an amazing day for all of us!
Discussion Questions:
1. Why did people get mad and start trouble in the end of chapter 19?
2. Who did God heal through Paul?
3. Where did the Holy Spirit want Paul to go?
4. Paul did a lot of encouraging. How can we encourage others?
Memory Verse:
"I want to finish the work that the Lord Jesus gave me to tell people the Good News about God's grace." Acts 20:24b
