CALVARY CHAPEL MERIDIAN

The Man at Lystra

This week in Calvary Kids, we learned about a man at Lystra who was born crippled and never had walked. We are going to see the huge miracle that happened and how the people responded to it. God is powerful and can do all things; this reminds us to not limit Him.

Read Acts 14:8-20

Can you imagine what it would have been like to be born crippled and never able to walk? Maybe you wouldn't know any different. Maybe it would make you feel out of place because everyone else around you could.

Well, this man at Lystra who was listening to Paul speak, believed that God could heal him. Paul could see this and so he was bold and told the man to stand up on his feet. The man did!! He jumped up and began walking around! What a miracle! If God tells you to do something that seems impossible to you, do you trust that He is going to help you accomplish that?

Now the crowd had seen this amazing thing happen, but they did not give God the credit. Instead, they believed the gods had come down and they started calling Barnabas, Zeus and Paul, Hermes. They believed this so much so that the priest and people of that city wanted to offer a sacrifice and worship them!

Paul and Barnabas were upset that the people started to worship them instead of God. They began to preach to them about God and how powerful He is, not them. Even while trying to speak the truth to them, the people of this city did not really give ear to the things being said and carried on in trying to sacrifice to them. Sometimes it is hard for people to believe that there is only ONE TRUE God, and it is easier to believe in gods or idols that they have made in their own lives. These are the people we need to be praying for; that they would have a true encounter with the REAL God.

By the end of this chapter, Jews ended up coming onto the scene and completely changed the mind of the people. They started to be mean to Paul by throwing stones at him and even believed him to be dead by the end! God had saved him and some people brought him back to the city to rest for the night and then they left for another city the next day.

There will be people in your life who do not want to accept who Jesus is. Just like Paul, we will meet people who won't want to believe but we should press on to share the truth because we all need Jesus. Sometimes it will feel like people don't even like us, but sometimes it is because they do not want to accept Jesus in their lives. Don't give up hope on praying for those around you and for the opportunity to share your faith like Paul and Barnabas did no matter what happens.

Discussion Questions:
1. What was it that the man couldn't do since he had been born?

2. Who healed him?

3. What are some things that God can do that are powerful?

4. How did the people react to the healing of the man?

5. How can we help those who do not want to believe?

6. Who can you pray for in your life that do not know Jesus yet?

Memory Verse:
"This man was listening to Paul speak. Paul looked straight at him and saw that the man believed God could heal him." Acts 14:9
