CALVARY CHAPEL MERIDIAN

Peter's Vision

Today in Calvary Kids, we learned that before Jesus, only the Jews could enter close to God as God’s chosen people, and non-Jewish people had to stay at a distance in the outer courts. But in today's story, we are going to see God use a man named Cornelius and his family to show Peter that God is doing new work (in the New Covenant) to see everyone become saved.

Read Acts 10

Here we see a centurion man named Cornelius who obeyed God when He told him to go to Joppa and find Peter. Right away, we see someone who truly wants to obey the Lord and listen to what He tells him to do.

At this time, while Cornelius and his men were still traveling,  Peter fell into a trance (a vision), while waiting for some food to eat. Verse 11-13 says, "He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” God used food as a picture to start Peter’s thinking process. He wanted Peter to know that God can make anything unclean, clean.

Immediately Peter rejected this. Yet, the Lord made it clear to Peter three times that what He has made clean, shall not be unclean. Peter still was trying to understand this vision while Cornelius came looking for him. As he talks with Cornelius, Peter finally understands what the Lord was trying to make clear to him all along. God was showing Peter that not only Jews can be saved, but also the Gentiles (those who were not Jewish).

This chapter is a good reminder to know that it doesn't matter where you are from, who you are, or what you have done. Jesus wants everyone to come to Him and be saved! Be bold just as Peter was bold in speaking the truth to all men! Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words to speak to others about Him.

Discussion Questions:
1. Is there someone in your life who you would want to see be saved?

2. What is a Jew?

3. What is a Gentile?

4. Do you think both Cornelius and Peter had faith in God? Why or why not?

5. How can we help those who don’t know God?

Memory Verse:
"Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right."" Acts 10:34-35
