Unto Us A Child Was Born

Jesus is the Best Gift

Today in Calvary Kids, we are going to learn about one of the most popular bible stories of all time. It’s one of the most popular stories because it’s tied into lots of people's favorite holiday. It is the story of Jesus being born into this world and what Christians see as the real meaning of Christmas. There are so many details to this story but today we’re going to spend some time talking about Jesus being placed in a manger and the wise men bringing Him gifts.

Read Luke 2:1-20

We begin this story with Mary and Joseph having to travel around 80 miles to get to
Bethlehem because Caesar Augustus decreed that everyone in all the world should be registered. Eighty miles would have been a long way to travel without a car (along with Mary being pregnant). It would be like if we walked all the way to Cascade!

After they got to Bethlehem, there was no room for them at the inn. How many of you have been on a vacation and stayed at a hotel. Well an inn back in the day is like
a hotel today. Imagine that you traveled a long way to a hotel and once you got there, there were no rooms left for you and your family and you had to find a place to sleep. There were no hospitals either, and Mary and Joseph’s family were not around. It would be a really
hard situation.

Mary ends up delivering Jesus in a manger and later some wise men showed up to bring Jesus gifts. The Gospel of Matthew gives us more to the story.

Matthew 2:11 says, "And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

Usually we think about getting gifts on Christmas and how Jesus is our true gift (the best gift we could ever get), but maybe we should think about what WE can give Jesus; just like the wise men gave gifts to Jesus. We can give Jesus our lives, because of His life that He gave for us.

If you haven't received the gift of Jesus and salvation so that you can spend eternity with Him in His presence, then maybe today is the day! Let Jesus be your gift and your life a gift to Him!

Family Discussion:
1. Do you this it was easy to travel 80 miles back in Bible days?

2. What kind of gift would you bring to Jesus?

3. Where was Jesus born?

4. What do you think it was like in the manger where Jesus was born? (dirty, smelly, uncomfortable?)

5. What is your favorite thing about Christmas?

6. What family traditions do you have on Christmas?

Memory Verse:
"And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." Luke 2:7
