Parable of Wheat and Tares

Through the Gospel Series: Be a True Follower of Christ

This week in Calvary Kids, we learned about the parable of wheat and tares. As we have talked about before, parables would be the way that Jesus would give the truth to those who truly wanted to hear and understand. This parable teaches that we should have good judgment, choose our friends wisely, and be a true listener to those who are wiser than us in Christ.

Read Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

In this parable, Jesus talks about how there’s a field, and in that field there are wheat and tares. The wheat and the tares that Jesus talks about in this parable are people. The wheat are the people who believe in Jesus and are a part of the kingdom of God, but the tares are people who don’t believe in Jesus and actually cause problems for others.

A tare is a weed that grows among the wheat and you don’t want weeds growing in your crops. It would seem natural to want to pull the tares (weeds) out, (the people who cause problems for others), but there is a huge problem in this; It’s very difficult to tell the difference between a wheat and a tare because they look so similar.

Although they may look similar, the biggest difference is that a tare has no nutritional value or substance. This can be the same thing when we pick our friends. We should be picking friends that build us up, encourage us, and are kind to us. When we get around people that only want to drag us away from the truth, this can be very dangerous. This is why it’s important to listen to your parents and wise counsel around you when you want to hang out with someone because sometimes that person may not always be the best for you and people around you may be able to observe this easier than you in the moment.

A lot of times when we try to remove these tares ourselves though, we can accidentally hurt "someone" who is considered a good crop in the field. In the end, we can trust that Jesus is the one who removes the tares. So we can ask for strength by praying for how to deal with people we might not like. If there’s someone who bothers you, God will always give you strength to deal with those people.

Jesus had someone in His life that caused problems; Judas. Yet, God used that to bring salvation to the world. So He can use these situations for good, but it’s still a good reminder to pick our friends wisely because they are the people who have the biggest impact on us.

Family Discussion:
1. Do you ask Jesus for help when you have a problem with someone?

2. Is it hard for you to see a good friend from a bad friend?

3. How do you feel when someone isn't nice to you?

4. What is discernment?

Memory Verse:
…“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but
while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.
