God's Covenant with Abraham

Genesis 15:5-6, 16:15-16

God made a covenant with Abram, promising to give him a son and descendants as numerous as the stars. As Abram grew older and older, he wondered how the Lord was going to give him so many descendants if he didn’t even have one child yet. Rather than waiting for God’s timing, Abram and Sarai took matters into their own hands. They decided that they should do something to help fulfill God’s promise, but God doesn’t need our help. God wants us to trust Him and wait for His timing. Sarai thought that maybe their promised child could come through their servant, Hagar. The result was the birth of Ishmael.

God was the one who would fulfill the covenant – not Abram, Sarai, or Hagar. Involving Hagar only led to trouble in their family. God alone fulfills His promises, and He wants us to trust Him!

Family Discussion and Prayer:
I encourage you to pray with your kids this week and thank God for His Word that teaches us to trust His promises. Ask God to help us wait for Him and not try to do things our way instead. His plan and timing is better than anything we can come up with on our own.

Memory Verse
