Sodom and Gomorrah
Genesis 18:1-2, 18:23-26, 18:32-33, 19:15-17, 19:23-26
In this lesson we jumped ahead to a time when Abram and Sarai had some very special visitors. Now, some exciting things happened to Abram and Sarai while they lived in Canaan. For example, God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah!
The Lord and two angels appeared to Abraham and announced the judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah because of the sin and wickedness there. Abraham pleaded not only for the cities but also for his nephew Lot.
The people of Sodom and Gomorrah had strayed so far from the Lord that they are described in the Bible as great sinners.
The angels gave Lot specific directions to get his family out of there and to not look back. Lot’s wife did not obey. She looked back. And because of that, she was turned into a pillar of salt.
Although God is patient when it comes to our sin, there comes a time when He must judge all people. That’s what He did to Sodom and Gomorrah. When we read about these kinds of events in the Bible, they are good reminders of God’s holiness, and that God is merciful. He showed kindness and mercy to Lot and his family by sending the angels to rescue them.
