Read Exodus 3:1-22; 4:1-17
Remember Moses from last week? He had to run away because he made a bad choice. Now Moses takes care of sheep. He was a shepherd for a long, long time. Today we're going to learn about when God talked to Moses from a burning bush- a bush with fire that didn't burn up!
The Bible tells us that Moses was watching his sheep when he saw something amazing! Moses was taking care of sheep and he saw a bush with fire on it- a real fire! But the bush stayed green, it didn't burn up! Moses said, "Wow, what is that? I need to take a closer look."
This fire was special because God's fire didn't hurt the bush!" The Bible tells us that God called Moses from the bush! God said, "Moses! Moses!" Moses said, "Here I am!" God said, "Take off your shoes! This is holy ground." Moses listened to God and took off his sandals. God knew Moses' name and he knows your name too! The Bible tells us that God wanted Moses to go help His people. God said "My people are sad in Egypt. I want you to go help them!" Moses said, "I can't do it! I'm scared and people won't believe what I say." But God said, "I will help you! I will be with you!" God promised to help Moses be brave and God always keeps His promises.
The Bible tells us that God gave Moses special signs to show the people God sent him. The people could see the special signs and know that Moses was speaking the truth. God made Moses' stick turn into a snake and made Moses' hand get sick and get better again. God said "I'll help you do amazing things!" Moses was scared to do what God asked, but God promised to help him. God helped him be brave and strong!
Moses saw God in a burning bush but Jesus came to earth so we could see God as a person! Jesus knows our names just like God knew Moses' name. Just like Moses talked to God, we can talk to Jesus anytime we want, especially when we are scared.
Key Connection:
1. Moses met God at a burning bush and received power to deliver Israel from slavery, but Jesus IS God who came to earth and delivers us from slavery to sin!
2. Moses saw the angel of the Lord in a burning bush (Exodus 3:2) → Jesus is the Angel of the Lord as a Christophany.
3. God called Moses by name from the bush (Exodus 3:4) → Jesus knows His sheep by name and calls each one (John 10:3-4).
4. Moses was sent to Egypt (Exodus 3:10) → Jesus was sent to the world (John 17:18).
5. Moses was called to deliver Israel from slavery (Exodus 3:10) → Jesus delivers all who believe in Him from the slavery of sin (Acts 4:12).
6. Moses was the Mediator between the people and God (Exodus 4:10-12) → Jesus is the One True Mediator between God and man (1Timothy 2:15).
7. Moses' staff turned to a snake → Jesus became sin for us on the cross (John 3:14-15).
8. Moses asks for God's Name and He said 'I AM' The 7 'I AM' statements of Jesus in the book of John.
9. Moses asks God His Name and He said 'I AM'→ Jesus said 'Before Abraham was, I AM' (John 8:58).
10. God assured Moses He would be with him (Exodus 3:12) → Jesus promised His continual presence with His followers (Matthew 28:20).
11. Moses' three signs were: Snake (satan), Leprosy (sin), and blood (atonement) → Jesus crushed the head of the serpent, cleansed us from all sin, and shed His own blood for us.
12. Moses was given three signs to prove his calling → Jesus gave the sign of His resurrection as proof He is Messiah.
13. When Moses asked God's name, God said "I AM WHO TAM." Hundreds of years later, Jesus made the religious leaders furious by saying "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58).
14. Jesus was claiming to be the same God who spoke to Moses from the burning bush!
15. Moses was afraid and made excuses, but Jesus willingly came to earth knowing He would die on the cross.
16. Moses needed God's power to do miracles, but Jesus had all power in Himself.
17. Moses could only lead people out of physical slavery, but Jesus breaks the chains of sin and gives us eternal life!
Application:
1. When God asks you to do something hard (like apologize to someone you hurt, or include the kid everyone ignores), remember that He'll give you the strength to do it - just like He promised Moses.
2. Stop making excuses when you know what's right. Instead of "I can't" or "It's too hard," pray "God, I'm scared but I trust You'll help me."
3. Pay attention to "burning bush" moments - when God might be calling you to help someone or stand up for what's right. Don't just walk by - "turn aside" and see what God wants.
4. Take off your sandals - approach God with respect and awe in prayer, not casually like He's your buddy but reverently like He's the holy Creator.
Trust God's timing - Israel waited 400 years for deliverance. Your prayer might not be answered immediately, but God sees, hears, and will act at the perfect time.
Discussion Questions:
1. What made the burning bush so unusual that Moses had to investigate? What might be some "burning bush" moments in your life where God is trying to get your attention?
2. What were Moses' five excuses for not wanting to go back to Egypt? Which excuse do you most relate to when God asks you to do something difficult?
3. Why do you think God chose to use Moses instead of just rescuing Israel Himself? How does God use ordinary people today?
4. What does God's name "I AM WHO I AM" tell us about Him? How is Jesus connected to this name?
5. If you were Moses, which of the three signs would have convinced you the most that God was really speaking? What "signs" or confirmations has God given you when He wants you to do something?
Memory Verse:
"Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say." Exodus 4:12
