David On the Run From Saul: The Life of David Series (Toddler/Prek)
Today in Calvary Kids, we see David on the run from Saul. We learned that when we are in trouble, we can run to God for protection and He protects us even when we might not clearly see how. Friends can help us during difficult times and lift us up, and yet sometimes we make poor choices when we are afraid, but God still loves us.
Read 1 Samuel 21-23
After Jonathan warned him, David had to leave everything behind and run for his life. He even went to Gath, a city of the Philistines (Israel’s enemies), because he thought it might be safer than staying in Israel. When fear took over and he realized this was not a good idea, David made some poor choices, like pretending to be insane to survive.
As he ran off again, David found a cave to hide in, and soon all kinds of hurting people started joining him—people who were sad, in debt, or felt like they didn’t belong. God turned David into a leader for the outcasts. The kids learned that Jesus is our ultimate refuge, just like David was for those people. Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God is the one who will help us in every single situation. One thing to keep our eyes on during this story is the fact that David was never handed over to Saul no matter what happened. Even though David ran in fear and was hiding from place to place, God kept him safe.
After this, Jonathan came to David and encouraged him even though it was dangerous for him to. He reminded David of God's promises and was truly a friend like no other to him in the exact moment he needed him. Choose to be a friend like this to one of your friends the next time they need the light in a dark place in their lives. We can all choose someone in our lives to be an encouragement to when hard things happening.
David’s time on the run points us to Jesus:
David Jesus
Just as people ran to David for help, we can run to Jesus for forgiveness, comfort, and protection that lasts forever. Unlike David who could only protect people temporarily, Jesus protects US FOR ETERNITY.

2.What poor choices did David make when he was scared?
3.How did God protect David even when Saul was chasing him every day?
4. How did Jonathan help David during this difficult time?
5. How is Jesus like David's cave of Adullam for us?
Memory Verse:
"And David stayed in strongholds in the wilderness, and remained in the mountains in the Wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand."
1 Samuel 23:14
