David and Goliath (The David Series)
Today we continue our series through the life of David. Last week we learned that God sees the heart, and He chose David to be king even though he was just a young shepherd. Today we'll see David face his biggest challenge yet-a giant named Goliath! Even though David is facing a big challenge, we'll see that David had faith that God could help him overcome. And that God is the one who truly gets the victory in every battle!
Read 1 Samuel 17: 1-50
The Philistines were a constant enemy of Israel and they fought each other all the time. What made them so scary was the fact that they had very tall soldiers. David ended up hearing Goliath's challenge to the Israelite army and wanted to defend God's honor and God's people. Even though this man was big, David's faith was even bigger.
David remembered how God helped him before! When we face scary things, it's easy to forget how God has helped us get through things in our past but we should always remember those past victories to help us in our current challenges. The most important thing here is David didn't trust in his own strength, he trusted in God's power. He knew that his God was bigger than any giant. David wasn't even going to take armor out to the battle. David was very brave! We probably all wish we could be brave, but the truth is that whenever we need help being brave we can always ask God to help us to be.
David fought "in the name of the Lord", meaning he was fighting for God's glory, not his own. The battle belonged to God, not David. God got all the credit for the victory just as he should! David defeated Goliath and the enemies of Israel were now the ones who were scared.
We don't have to be afraid of challenges when we have God on our side. God used an unlikely hero like David, so it goes to show that God can even use me and you to do something great and beyond what we could ever imagine. Everyone saw the victory of the Lord that day, and may people see God getting victories in our lives as well.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why wasn't David afraid of Goliath when everyone else was?
2. How had God prepared David for this moment?
3. What "giants" do you face that seem too big for you?
4. How can you remember to trust God when facing difficult situations?
5. How is Jesus like David fighting for us?
Memory Verse:
"I come to you in the name of the Lord." 1 Samuel 17:45
