God is With Us in the Storms (Toddler/PreK)
This week in Calvary Kids, we will see Paul go through another hard time. This time is different than the other times before Kings, Governors or even the Jews though!
We will see a storm and even a shipwreck! God is with us in everything, including the good times (the sunny days) and the hard times (the stormy days). He knows that we need Him always!
Read Acts 27
Paul is finally going to Italy where Caesar is by ship. This journey would have taken them about 23 days! They got on the ship and started their journey and had a really nice officer who was taking them to where they were going. The officer even allowed Paul to talk to his friends! In verse 4 it says they had to sail close to an island because the wind was blowing way too hard. They didn’t have boats with engines back in this time and only had sails. These sails would help the ship move with wind. Then to turn the ship, they would use the sails and rudders. Rudders are like oars that you would use to steer a canoe or small boat.
This made sailing back in Paul's day a lot more scary because the wind could really damage the ship and cause wrecks to happen if the weather was dangerous.
They were sailing slowly for many days. The weather was very bad and they were having a hard time getting to where they needed to go because of the wind. They lost so much time, but it was too dangerous to keep going. Paul tried to give a warning, but no one really listened and they decided to keep moving. Even though Paul was warning them, He knew God was still with him. Whatever was going to happen, Paul trusted the Lord and we should too!
The storm started to really pick up and it got so bad that they were starting to throw things off the ship. They had to do this in order to help the ship to stay afloat and not go under.
Do you think they were scared and worried that they wouldn’t make it? Paul is probably doing a lot of praying during this time and continuing to trust God. Three whole days they couldn’t see the sun or the stars, but God was with them and Paul knew it too. God gave Paul a promise that they would survive and he trusted fully in that despite the circumstances.
What a crazy time this must of been with so many things happening at once. Is it crazy to think there were 276 people on the ship? That is a lot! Paul said they would live and that’s exactly what happened. Just like Paul was, it is easy to be confident in the Lord when things are going well, but harder to be when storms come in and things are really hard.
Remember this always: God is faithful in the good times AND the bad times.
He didn’t say we would have an easy life and because we live in a world filled with sin, this makes it even harder.
What is sin? Sin is anything we say, think, or do that goes against what God says.
When God made the world, He made it perfect. There was no lying, no bruises, scratches, tummy aches or crying. One day He will make it that way again, but for now we still have sin and there is still evil in this world.
The only One who can get us through it all is God. Our chapter finally ends with them crashing onto the island. Next week, we will see what happens while they are on that island and we will finally see Paul make it to Rome! Next week is our last chapter in Acts. Let’s pray now and thank God for what we have learned and thank Him for being with us always, even in the storms!
Discussion Questions:
1. How did Paul show that he trusted God?
2. What did Paul know that everyone else didn’t?
3. How can we show that we trust in God?
4. How can we encourage others when they are in a storm of life?
Memory Verse:
"So men, be cheerful! I trust in God." Acts 27:25a
