CALVARY CHAPEL MERIDIAN

Honoring Mothers

Today in Calvary kids, we learned what it means to honor our mothers. It is a commandment to honor your parents and by doing this it says you will live a long and full life. When we listen to our moms, they help us make good decisions and choices in life. By listening to the wisdom that mothers can give us, it can help us live a life that is better and safer for us.

Read Matthew 1:18, Luke 2:1, Luke 2:41-52, John 2:1-11, John 19:25-27, Luke 1:45 and Romans 10:9-10

Mary went through a lot even before Jesus was born. She had to travel very far while being pregnant, which wasn’t easy. They did not have cars back then like they do now and she gave birth to Jesus in a manger because there was no room in any hotel. During this time,  Herod was trying to find Jesus and ordered that all male babies be killed. Just like Mary went through a lot for Jesus, our mothers also do a lot for us. (Usually more than we know). They cook, clean and go to work for us so we should always be thankful to our moms every day and not just on mother’s day.

When Jesus was just 12 years old, He was hanging out in the temple and talking about God to others. Mary and her family had left and were on their journey back home when they realized that Jesus was not with them. Mary was concerned and worried about where Jesus was. In the same way, our moms love us so much and are always concerned about where we are and want to know that we are safe.

Mary made a mistake and didn’t know where Jesus was but she was trying her best to make it right. Our moms also make mistakes sometimes because no one is perfect. Yet we should honor our moms even if they make a mistake. They love us and care about us so much and one way to honor them is to forgive and continue to be grateful to them.

Just as Mary was proud of Jesus for the miracle he did in turning water into wine, our mothers are also proud of us for the things that we do. Your mom is your greatest cheerleader when you allow her to be and she will always do what she can to encourage you and build you up in Christ.

Can you imagine what Mary felt as a mother when she saw her son hanging on the cross to die for our sins? She believed who Jesus was and knew she would one day get to see Him in Heaven. Even though she probably went through grief seeing what had been done to her son on earth, she knew the end result in the end and now gets to be in Heaven with Jesus once again. Just like Mary, our mothers want us to be in heaven also one day when we die and they want to teach us what it means to believe in Him and be saved. What a beautiful thing!

Do you know the biggest and greatest mother's day present you could ever give to your mom on mother's day? It is her knowing that you have accepted Jesus into your heart and because you are saved, one day you will get to be in Heaven with Him. If you have not taken that step yet, I would urge you now, not just for your mom's sake, but for yours!
